Hubble eyes the needle galaxy: IC 2233, one of the flattest galaxies known

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Like finding a silver needle in the haystack of space, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a beautiful image of the spiral galaxy IC 2233, one of the flattest galaxies known.

Typical spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are usually made up of three principal visible components: the disk where the spiral arms and most of the gas and dust is concentrated; the halo, a rough and sparse sphere around the disk that contains little gas, dust or star formation; and the central bulge at the heart of the disk, which is formed by a large concentration of ancient stars surrounding the Galactic Center.

However, IC 2233 is far from being typical. This object is a prime example of a super-thin galaxy, where the galaxy's diameter is at least ten times larger than the thickness. These galaxies consist of a simple disk of stars when seen edge on. This orientation makes them fascinating to study, giving another perspective on spiral galaxies. An important characteristic of this type of objects is that they have a low brightness and almost all of them have no bulge at all.

The bluish color that can be seen along the disk gives evidence of the spiral nature of the galaxy, indicating the presence of hot, luminous, young stars, born out of clouds of interstellar gas. In addition, unlike typical spirals, IC 2233 shows no well-defined dust lane. Only a few small patchy regions can be identified in the inner regions both above and below the galaxy's mid-plane.

Lying in the constellation of Lynx, IC 2233 is located about 40 million light-years away from Earth. This galaxy was discovered by British astronomer Isaac Roberts in 1894.

This image was taken with the Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, combining visible and infrared exposures. The field of view in this image is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes.

NRA response in wake of Connecticut shooting condemned by California Democratic senator

California Democratic senator Leland Yee has termed the response of National Rifle Association (NRA) to violent video games as ?pathetic and unacceptable.?

He said that the NRA was nowhere to be seen when the Supreme Court his law regarding violent game was brought before the Supreme Court last year and thus finds it pretty mind-boggling at the sudden concern over the harmful effects of games that depict extreme violence.

?I find it mind-boggling that the NRA suddenly cares about the harmful effects of ultra-violent video games," Yee said. "When our law was before the Supreme Court--while several states, medical organizations, and child advocates submitted briefs in support of California?s efforts--the NRA was completely silent."

Continuing to speak out against the NRA, he said that the idea proposed by the latter of having armed guards at schools etc. is not the answer to ensuring the protection of children.

He pointed out that the armed guards at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were unable to prevent the deadly shooting from taking place or protecting the 20 children and six adults that lost their lives during the incident.

Yee claimed that the NRA are simply choosing to pass the blame for the incident to other things instead of embracing the fact that one of the key factors that led to the tragedy is gun proliferation.

NRA vice president Wayne LaPierre had stated during a press conference last week that the media has been demonising legal gun owners and spreading misinformation instead of pointing out the actual culprits that paved way for the Connecticut shooting.

He had argued that it was the extreme violence in games, films and music videos that preached and glorified such inhumane acts instead of condemning them.

According to him, such inappropriate content should not be called entertainment as it is nothing less than the filthiest type of pornography.

LaPierre blamed the big companies and stockholders for sowing seeds of violence against their own people, something that is more often than naught ignored by everyone.

Democratic West Virginia Jay Rockefeller introduced a bill in Congress last week, which would task the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to study the short-term and long term effects of violent content on children and their well-being.

LG Unveils a Gigantor 100-Inch Laser Projector: You're Gonna Need Bigger Walls

Conventional video projectors have remained largely a niche market for dedicated home theater enthusiasts on account of their difficult installation. However, a new breed of "home projector" has developed over the past few years into an increasingly viable alternative to flat panel televisions. And if LG's new 100-inch class LG "HECTO" Laser TV is any indicator, the LED/Plasma debate may be moot. More »

Australian scientists have shown in the laboratory how a 'transcription factor' causes breast cancer cells to develop an aggressive subtype that lacks sensitivity to estrogen and does not respond to known anti-estrogen therapies. The research, which has significant implications for breast cancer treatment, is published December 27 in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

Transcription factors are molecules that switch genes on or off. In this case, the transcription factor known as 'ELF5' inhibits sensitivity to estrogen very early in the life of a breast cancer cell. In 2008, Professor Chris Ormandy from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia, showed that ELF5 was responsible for the development of breast progenitor cells into the estrogen-receptor-negative cells that produce milk in the breast during pregnancy.

In the current study, a team led by Ormandy in collaboration with Drs Maria Kalyga and David Gallego-Ortega, has shown that the same molecular decision occurs in breast cancer and that ELF5 has the ability to change an existing tumour into an estrogen-insensitive tumour.

"This work tells us that cancers which become refractory to anti-estrogen treatment often do so by elevating their levels of ELF5 and becoming functionally estrogen receptor negative," said Ormandy.

The team has also described the genetic mechanisms by which ELF5 opposes the action of estrogen, and has shown that it is possible to alter the subtype of breast cancer by manipulating ELF5 levels in cancer cells in the laboratory.

"This raises the therapeutic option of manipulating ELF5 levels to treat breast cancer. As ELF5 is intracellular, this could possibly be done with small molecule therapies that penetrate cells and target protein-to-protein interactions, or with small inhibitory RNAs. There is also the possibility of testing ELF5 levels in tumours to predict response to treatment and therefore guide treatment decisions."

"Our key discovery here is that by simply manipulating one transcription factor we can change the subtype of breast cancer."

Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response.

No threat to game sales from Connecticut shooting, says analyst ...

No threat to game sales from Connecticut shooting, says analyst

Cowan & Company analyst Doug Creutz is convinced that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting incident will have little to no impact on the sales of video games, even the ones depicting violence.

He assured the worried investors that video games will continue to sell well in the market irrespective of a new legislation, which seems highly likely with West Virginia Democrat senator Jay Rockefeller introducing a bill in the Congress for investigation of effects of violent games on children and their well-being.

Creutz also stated that the consumer backlash in the wake of tragic Connecticut shooting would be minor at most and will therefore not result in significant losses at all.

?We have received many questions from investors about the potential impact of the recent tragedy in Newtown on our covered universe of video game publisher stocks,? Creutz said. ?While this is a difficult issue to address due to the intense emotions surrounding the incident, we have attempted to present a summary of the relevant facts herein.?

The Cowan & Company analyst noted that the Supreme Court?s ruling last week, which deemed sales of violent games to children is in direct violation of the First Amendment, has laid down a solid ground for any attempts to regulate sales of video game to be struck down immediately.

Addressing the bill introduced by Rockefeller in Congress, Creutz contended that majority of the adults have already established an opinion about the effect of video game violence and real world violence and these opinions will not change that easily.

The bill introduced in Congress would task the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to carry out a comprehensive study and investigation of the effects of violence in video games and other programming and their effects on the minds and well-being of children.

Creutz claimed that retailer checks with Amazon has revealed that first-person shooters such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4 are continuing to do really well in terms of market performance, thus making it quite obvious that the consumer behaviour has hardly been affected by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Lieberman fears country may go over 'fiscal cliff'

President Barack Obama speaks to reporters about the fiscal cliff in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senator bickered Sunday over who's to blame for lurching the country toward a year-end "fiscal cliff," bemoaning the lack of a deal days before the deadline but bridging no differences in the debate.

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Sen. Joe Lieberman said "it's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted that the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is what is the solution?"

No solution seemed any nearer, with Obama and Congress on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

"The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he'll come back, propose just what he proposed ... in leaving Washington and we'll end up adopting it, but why should we put the markets in such turmoil and the people misunderstanding or lack of confidence," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Why not go ahead and act now?

Obama's announcement late Friday suggested that a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, given the failure of Boehner's option in the House.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Klobuchar and Isakson were on "Fox News Sunday."

Judge: Oklahoma can end Planned Parenthood deals

(AP) ? A federal judge on Monday denied a request by Planned Parenthood to temporarily block Oklahoma from terminating a contract with the agency to provide nutritional services to low-income mothers.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot ruled that although the state's stated reasons don't seem to be sufficient cause for ending agreements with Planned Parenthood's three Tulsa-area clinics that have been in place for 18 years, the group's response to the state's concerns was insufficient enough to warrant ending the relationship.

The decision will likely mean that the group will have to close one of the clinics and eliminate six full-time staff positions when the contracts end on Dec. 31, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's President and CEO Jill June said in a statement.

"We are truly disappointed with today's court ruling and the impact it will have on the women and children in the Tulsa area who have relied on Planned Parenthood for (the federal Women, Infants and Children program) and the many other services we provide," June said. "While we are convinced of our claim, we will weigh all our possible options going forward."

The Oklahoma State Department of Health notified Planned Parenthood in September that it planned to end agreements it had with three Planned Parenthood for the last 18 years, citing the uncertainty of federal funds, declining caseloads and a higher cost-per-participant rate at clinics in west Tulsa, midtown Tulsa and Broken Arrow.

A spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, which represents the health department, said in a statement that she was pleased with the judge's decision.

"Judge Friot looked at the facts of the case and understood that the decision by the health department was based on legitimate business reasons," said spokeswoman Diane Clay.

But Planned Parenthood contends that the actual reason the state, whose leadership is among the most conservative in the country, decided not to renew the contracts was because the organization offers abortion services at some of its U.S. clinics, although it doesn't at the three Tulsa-area clinics.

Terry Cline, the state's health commissioner, testified during a hearing about Planned Parenthood's motion last week that the group's abortion-related activities should "absolutely not" factor into the state's decisions on whether to renew or end the contracts. Cline and other Health Department administrators have said the contracts weren't renewed because of a variety of long-term managerial and administrative problems, including a decline in caseloads, increasing client costs and a failure to resolve budgetary questions.

This year, the clinics received a total of $454,000 to provide WIC services and averaged about 3,000 client visits per month, or about 18 percent of all WIC client visits in Tulsa County, according to state Health Department data.

In his ruling, Friot wrote that while Planned Parenthood's performance deficiencies, primarily its declining caseloads, do not appear to be enough to result in the termination of its contracts, he added: "But a routine, solvable problem can become a justifiable basis for strong action when it is compounded by persistent unresponsiveness in addressing the challenge. Moreover, the frustrations in getting information out of (Planned Parenthood) on what should have been routine administrative matters rubbed additional salt into the wound."

Other conservative-led states have also taken steps to cut funding to Planned Parenthood.

Indiana passed the first law meant to deny Planned Parenthood federal funding for general health services, but a federal appeals court in October upheld a lower court's finding that Indiana violated federal regulations when it enacted the law. A judge in Arizona blocked that state from applying a similar law to Planned Parenthood.

In Texas, the GOP-controlled Legislature passed a law last year that sought to exclude Planned Parenthood clinics that provide family planning and health services to poor women as part of the Texas Women's Health Program.

In response to Texas' decision to ban any clinic affiliated with abortion providers from taking part in its Women's Health Program, federal authorities announced they would cut off funding that accounts for 90 percent of the program's family-planning costs and half of its administrative costs. Texas tried to block the funding cut, but a federal judge last week sided with federal authorities, who say the state's exclusion of Planned Parenthood violates U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines.

DocsFolder.com | Must Have Information About Video Game Consoles

Video games are something that people play all over the world. The information in this article will help you navigate the world of video games without buying a poor game, or one that isn?t age-appropriate.

Try reducing your level of cheat codes used for skill-dependent games. Too many cheat codes undermine the challenge and purpose of playing the game. Cheats should be used on sporting titles to allow you to enjoy the game more.

If you are really into video games, you probably enjoy many genres. You should branch out and play different ones! Be sure to try games that are outside of your usual genres. Sometimes you find a specific title, which really impresses you.

Video games keep evolving. So do gamers. Low prices, instant access and huge selection are expected by all modern gamers. If that game you want is expensive, don?t buy it for a while. The prices on video games go down when they get older so they will keep selling.

When you are playing video games, pay attention to the signals your body is sending you. If you sit to play games, consider using a stability ball to keep your spine straight. If you like active games, stretch regularly so that your body can adjust.

The Entertainment and Software Rating Board, or ESRB, rates video games. An Early Childhood (EC) rating is appropriate for children aged three and over. An E (Everyone) rating means the game is considered appropriate for those above the age of six. Games rated E+10 are appropriate for children 10 years of age and older. A T-rating means Teens 13 or older can play it. An M rating, which stands for ?Mature,? means a game is suitable only for those 17 or older. AO means Adults Only and RP stands for Rating Pending.

Rent games before spending loads of money on new video games. Most of the time, you can?t return a video game you don?t want. Video game rentals help you get a good feel for the game, without costing you too much for trial and error.

When looking to purchase a new video game, be sure to check the price. An expensive game is not necessarily the best. Never fail to read the box so that you know what you are getting. Online reviews can also be very helpful in deciding whether to make a purchase. Never purchase anything you?re not sure about.

If you have kids then you want to get them games that are right for their age. Look on the box or the game itself for ratings that give you guidance on what is appropriate for certain age groups. You will likely want to avoid the games that blatantly promote excessive violence.

You might want to buy all the expansions and upgrades from a game as soon as you buy it. This can cost you quite a bit of money! Try to refrain from making all of these purchases and stick to your budget. Thoroughly explore the content and gameplay you?ve already paid for before you go shopping for more.

Understand what your game ratings mean. Some video games are not meant for children and are not kid-friendly. EC games are suitable for early childhood where AO games are only for adults. Be sure to choose an appropriately rated game, especially if it is a gift designed for someone else.

If you have children, be sure their video games are appropriate for their age. Look at the game?s cover for the recommended age range. Some video games focus on violence, which you should avoid.

You can go to bed when you?re dead! Some people think this is the best motto for a gamer. That?s just plain nonsense. You need to sleep at least eight hours night to maintain your mental alertness.

Stay hydrated when you plan on playing games for long amounts of time. Video games can get someone away from reality, even to the point where they are forgetting to take care of their basic needs. As with any other activity, failure to take in enough water can put your health at risk, so make sure you take in enough fluid during your gaming sessions.

Join your kids for a great gaming experience. This can be a great way to spend quality time with them. Also, you can ensure that the games your kids play with are appropriate for them.

There are several options when it comes to video games including consoles, computers and cell phones. Lots of console games also offer versions for computers, allowing you to play your favorite titles on any system.

Pick games you and your children both like so you can spend time having fun together. Children usually love video games and can actually learn a few things from these games. Several games with educational value are available, which can also increase hand-eye coordination.

When searching for new games, research online auction sites. If you would like to save some money on video games, try auction sites like eBay for great deals. Take the time to compare prices and perhaps wait until the titles you want are for sale. Then you just have to keep on bidding until you win!

Consider downloading games online. There are plenty of different games you can get for the computer that you can enjoy for free that will save you some money. Put some money aside if you still want to play more recent games.

If your kids are playing online, you should monitor it. Some games have warnings about certain situations within the game changing the rating overall. Many games offer chat features and customization options for characters and equippable items. You will always want to ensure your child?s safety if they are engaging in these online gaming opportunities.
